OCR (make searchable)

Makes a scanned PDF searchable, so its text can be selected and found.

To make a PDF searchable:

  1. Drop your PDF, or use Choose files or From library.
  2. Choose the Document language — English, Nepali, "English and Nepali", Hindi, German, French or Spanish — or type a code under Other language (a Tesseract language code, e.g. ita, combined with + for more than one).
  3. Adjust Scan detail under "More options" if needed.
  4. Select Make searchable (or Make <n> PDFs searchable with several files).

Above the button, the preview tells you what OCR will actually do to this file: "Pages 1–3 have no text layer and will be recognised", or, if the file already has text throughout, "Every page already has text — recognising it again changes little". A long PDF may show "Only the first <n> pages were checked".

What you'll see when it's done: the searchable PDF, ready to download, alongside the recognised text as a second file.

If something goes wrong

On a device without the language pack installed and no internet connection, you'll see "This tool can't run on this device alone. Connect to the internet and try again." A failed row otherwise shows its reason with Try again.
